Amazon Finally Reveals The Size Of Its Massive Cloud Computing Business

The company for the first time broke out revenue and profit figures for AWS, saying it had $1.57 billion in sales in the first quarter of this year and $265 million in profit, up from a $245 million profit and $1.05 billion in sales in the first quarter of last year. AWS's margins, however, declined to 16.9% from 23.3% in the first quarter of last year. While the revenue figure was in line with what many analysts expected, the robust profit figure was a surprise, especially considering how willing Amazon is to sacrifice the profitability of a business in order to drive up revenue and win market share.
